Is your DNA your destiny?

I was flipping through a TIME magazine the other day and something caught my eye…

Turns out that about 25% of people are born with a gene called APOE4 which puts them at a higher risk for Alzheimer’s…

1 in 4, that’s a lot.

And you might be reading this thinking…

‘What if I have the defective gene?’

I don’t like to admit it, but that’s the thought that came into my mind after reading the article…

Because if I’m being completely honest, I have some brain fog sometimes.

Karen might ask me something, and it feels like I have to fight through a cloud in my brain to get to the answer. Even when I feel like it should be right there…

Or other times, I get what my kids call “senior’s moments” when I zone out for a couple seconds and I forget what I was doing.

I used to chalk that up to getting older.

It’s not like I’m 25 anymore after all. But reading this article put a little scare into me.

So I thought about ways to find out if I have this bad gene or not.

There’s tons of online DNA tests out there. And I considered coughing up the $170 it costs to take one…

But ultimately I decided against it.

Why?

Because even if I do have the bad gene, I can’t change that…

That article reminded me to focus on the choices I can control. The things I have the power to change.

Like exercising everyday…

Or reading books that keep my brain active…

Or eating healthy REAL foods instead of processed junk…

Because each of those decisions have changed my life for the better, and they all happen to be things I can control.

And that’s the big thing you should take away from this…

Focus on what you CAN control, and don’t worry about what you CAN’T control when it comes to your health.

Do that and you’ll have a brain that’s as sharp as a tack.

One takeaway from this article that we all should remember…

The folks with the “bad” gene showed just as much improvement with lifestyle changes as the ones without it.

So your DNA isn’t your destiny… if you make the effort to do something good for yourself.

Alright, that’s all for today.

I’ll be back with more tomorrow.
