Why the salt ban in New York is wrong…

Bloomberg’s famous “salt ban” in restaurants is in the news again today…

Apparently, today is the day that the city of New York is allowed to start fining restaurants that don’t comply with the “salt warnings” that are supposed to be labeled on certain foods…

A huge waste of taxpayer dollars if you ask me…

Why?

Well for one, this is America and if you want to eat a bunch of salt, then that’s your God-given right.

Let the restaurant serve the people what they want…

Second, the salt reduction ban is misguided.

The idea that just reducing salt intake will somehow make the city healthier is bogus.

Don’t believe me?

A major study in 2011 in the Journal of American Medical Association showed that lower salt intake rates were associated with a HIGHER risk of stroke, heart attack and death.

To put it simply…

Reducing salt intake was associated with more people dying than a more moderate salt intake was.

If that’s not enough to dissuade you, then you should know that lower salt intakes have also been associated with really poor outcomes with Type 2 Diabetes.

People with Type 2 diabetes are more likely to die early on a low-salt diet (mostly due to complications with insulin resistance).

But the mainstream media won’t tell you any of this…

The low salt diet has been drilled into our heads for years and years.

So while ole’ Michael Bloomberg thought he was doing the city a favor, he may have actually been causing more problems.

In fact, I’ve always said that REAL salt is vital to your body.

I use a handful of it everyday on my eggs, steak and potatoes (I use himalayan pink salt)

And while some people may see a drop in their blood pressure on a low salt diet, they also are probably going to have a number of BAD “side effects” from not getting enough salt.

The moral of the story?

Make sure you get enough salt each day.

And if it’s a real salt like pink himalayan or celtic sea salt, that’s even better…
