Vancouver sushi chef reveals the “secret” to staying lean

So I’m in Vancouver for a few days, and last night we decided to hit up a little sushi bar near our hotel…

It was apparently a slow night at the restaurant, so I started chatting with the sushi chef and we got on the topic of making sushi.

Turns out, he’s been making sushi for nearly 40 years now!

He was about the same age as me, in his mid fifties, and had been honing his craft every single day for 40 years!


He told me all about how he learned to make the rice, how to cut the fish and how to select the fish at the market.

It was fascinating.

And he said after 40 years, he was still learning.

After a few minutes of hearing his story, I asked him the question I was dying to know…

“So what’s the secret to making great sushi?” I said

He looked at me with a little smile on his face and said…

No secret. “Once you know what to do, you show up and you do it everyday.  And then your sushi gets better and better ” 

I had a little laugh when he said this because I often get the same question when it comes to getting in shape or losing weight…

“Jeff, what’s your secret?”

And my response is similar to his…

Being successful at anything in life is all about “showing up” and doing it everyday.  

Most people don’t even get that part correct.

I follow the Flat Belly After 50 program every single day, and I workout 3-4x per week.

There’s nothing fancy about what I do.

The real secret is that I actually stick to it.

I practice what I preach. 

I’m not running to Dunkin Donuts in the morning or McDonald’s at lunch time.

So just like the sushi chef, almost all of my success with staying in shape as I get older can be credited to me just “showing up” every single day.

Just like the sushi chef said…

Once you know what to do, then it’s all about doing it every single day.

And that’s a powerful point…

And it’s as applicable to getting in shape as it is to sushi, or even saving money for retirement.

Most people know what to do, they just don’t consistently do it.

That’s the key.
