We’re still in the first couple months of a new year… of a new decade.
Everyone has a “hot list” or “Top 10” or some other rundown of what’s trendy right now, or what’s bound to be in the coming months.
Health is certainly no exception.
I don’t tend to be trendy. I know what works for me, and what I’ve seen work for most folks. The best things that you can do for your health boil down to some old tried-and-true habits.
Most everything else is just noise.
If you’ve been with me for any length of time, you know where I stand:
1. Don’t smoke
2. Increase your fruits & veggies
3. Drink plenty of water
4. Move your body every day
5. Prioritize sleep
6. Cut back on sugar
If you do those things, you’re 80% of the way there. But I have to admit, I’m intrigued when it comes to what’s “new” and exciting, just like anyone else.
So this Sunday, let’s take a walk through what I’ve seen over the last few months, and see if the “experts” are on the right track…
First is a recognition that mental health is intertwined with physical health. It used to be taboo to recognize this. But if you’re not happy and fit mentally… it’s hard to be healthy in the long run.
So this trend is definitely good.
Another good one is avocado oil. It has a high smoke point, it’s a healthy fat, it’s perfect for roasting, it’s chock full of nutrients and antioxidants, and it doesn’t make your food taste like coconuts. The only downside is it’s not cheap… but high quality health sometimes isn’t.
One thing that is also getting some new attention is what’s called “HILIT”: High Intensity, Low Impact Training. If you’ve never used a rowing machine before, I’d definitely recommend it. It’s a great way to get a full-body workout, without taxing your joints.
Rowing uses over 80% of your body’s muscles with every stroke – I love it.
Another thing you’ll see more of this year is “meatless” everything. Here I am cautious.
Just because it’s meat doesn’t mean it’s bad. And just because it looks like meat and tastes like meat doesn’t mean it’s healthy either. Still, I had a jackfruit taco the other day and if you had told me it was pork carnitas, I would have believed you. Weird.
And one last trend that is long overdue but likely will be hard for people to do is to cut down on their mobile device use.
It’s very good to put your phone, computer, or tablet away an hour or so before bed. Sleep is far too important, and these devices really muck with your ability to relax and get your rest.
But then again… saying sleep is important isn’t really that trendy, is it?
