OAB? Avoid these foods…

When you’re dealing with bladder problems, like overactive bladder (OAB) and incontinence, you want to do all you can to reduce the urge to go and keep your bladder control in line.

That’s why it’s so critical to be mindful of the foods you eat.

Because certain foods are known to irritate your bladder, and that’s the last thing you want to do if you’re suffering.

One type of food to avoid is acidic foods.

Like cranberries.

This may be surprising.

For many years cranberry juice was thought to help with urinary health.

But cranberries are highly acidic and all that acid can irritate the bladder and increase urgency.

Tomatoes are also acidic and known to worsen overactive bladder symptoms.

So, steer clear of ketchup and tomato-based salsas and pasta sauce.

Citrus fruits, like oranges, limes, lemons and grapefruit, are high in citric acid.

This compound gives these foods their sour taste, and also makes them highly irritating to the bladder.

To improve bladder control, swap out acidic fruits with less-acidic ones, like bananas, red apples, melon, and papaya.

Spicy foods not only make your mouth burn and your eyes water, they also can wreak havoc on your bladder.

Skip the heat to keep your bladder comfortable.

Fan of raw onions? Take note that raw onions can worsen bladder symptoms and increase the urge to go.

Cook your onions before eating them and your bladder will thank you.

Caffeine is another bladder irritator.

Since caffeine is a diuretic, it can increase urine production and feelings of urgency.

If you’re a coffee or tea lover, consider switching to decaf.

Alcohol is another diuretic, so you want to limit consumption.

Not only can alcohol consumption increase the amount of urine you make, but if you drink too much, it can disrupt the signals that let you know when your bladder is full, leading to an accident.

If you’re a fan of “fizzy” drinks, be aware that carbonation can worsen OAB symptoms.

Stick with plain water and drink it in small amounts throughout the day.

Bladder troubles can make life miserable, and crush your confidence.

But with a few changes you can help improve bladder control and reduce the urge to go.
