Politics has become such a dumpster fire that what passed for a “gaffe” years ago would barely register today.
Remember when Obama was campaigning in Iowa for the first time years ago?
It didn’t take long for him to be shown as out of touch with this doozy:
“Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula?” then Senator Obama said.
“I mean, they’re charging a lot of money for this stuff.”
The reaction from the crowd… crickets.
There’s no Whole Foods in the entire state of Iowa. At least there wasn’t then.
And despite the fact that Iowans actually grow and sell a fair bit of this leafy green, not that many are actually eating it.
Not many Americans anywhere are. At least, not compared to iceberg.
Which they might want to reconsider.
You might too.
Here, I’m going to say it: arugula has gotten a bad rap.
When you consider how healthy it is, and how easy it is to grow, eating it really doesn’t deserve to be painted as proof of being a foo-foo elite.
Around the world, arugula – sometimes called “rocket lettuce” – is seen as an aphrodisiac. It adds a zest to a salad… and potentially to your love life.
And we’ve come to realize why.
It’s the highest natural source of nitrates known. And your body uses nitrates to boost production of nitric oxide (NO), vitally important for circulation, energy, stamina and yes… sexual function.
When you eat foods rich in nitrates and nitrites, they enter the body through the GI tract. And that’s when the conversion to NO begins.
More NO means a sharper mind, a stronger heart, and all-day energy.
But maybe that’s not enough to get you to eat arugula. Fair enough.
The good news is there are other ways to help produce or protect NO. Some you might actually like!
Dark chocolate, or raw cacao, supports blood pressure, is rich in antioxidants, fights inflammation, and can increase NO too. Too bad most of the chocolate we eat in this country is of the milk variety, or loaded with sugar.
And while it’s good for a treat, eating enough chocolate to boost NO probably has too many downsides.
Grass fed meat and wild seafood are a source of CoQ10. This is a necessary helper to raise NO levels. While it doesn’t do the trick on its own, it’s a great partner to things that do.
Watermelon is chock full of an amino acid called l-citrulline, which gets converted to l-arginine and then NO. The issue here is most of this NO boost comes from the rind, what we typically throw away. I suppose you could drink a glass of watermelon rind juice. I can’t imagine it’s tasty.
Or you could skip the melon and go straight to an l-arginine supplement. But the body doesn’t absorb this amino acid very well, so typically you’re looking at a lot of pills.
Now one of the best natural boosters for NO are beets.
But beets have the same problems as arugula (without the stigma).
People don’t eat them, you need to eat a bunch of them, and at least for me, they don’t taste good. At all.
So drinking a glass of straight beet juice is not going to happen.
But you can get the benefits of beets, in a way that’s easy and delicious. And you don’t even have to chew…
Just let this special lozenge dissolve in your mouth. And for some folks, you can feel your NO rise in as little as a few minutes.
Whether you use the extra stamina to do Pilates or sip lattes is up to you…
